Welcome to Orb Graffiti, a place for me to write daily about life and computers. Contrary to popular belief, the two are not interchangeable.     About eMail - I publish email sometimes. 1248 - Good afternoon. We're back in our own timezone, no longer suffering from NOBS (Not Our Bed Syndrome). Of course the trip back was not without travail. We had equipment changes followed by maintenance that hung us up for an extra two hours in Dallas ... we got home about 0100 this morning. But still, we got out of SFO before a bomb scare closed our terminal. That would have meant another day or two in CA, trying to get home.

Now I've been through the mails, and it's time to pay bills. Maybe I'll have time to catch up here later... ciao!

Mon    TUESDAY    Wed    Thu    Fri    Sat    Sun
January 17, 2006

0940 - Good morning. Back at work and in the groove. I actually put in about 4 hours working yesterday, between hanging out in IRC alternately assisting and mocking, and clearing out/reading the accumulated emails. I also got the bills paid and mailed, Marcia and I got the laundry done, lots of progress on many fronts. Now I've got plenty to do here, so I'd best be about it. No, I'm not thinking about the new Apple PowerBook Pro (or whatever they're calling it). I'm not ... at least until there are dual core EM64 chips in there. Anyway, on with the show.

0816 - Good morning. Yeah, like I have time for this. http://chir.ag/stuff/sand/ Sigh. Thanks, Jerry!

1056 - There's other fun stuff going on, too. I saw in Slashdot reference to this trauma pill. From the story: "They have been testing a pill that, when given after a traumatic event like rape, may make the resulting memories less painful and intense." Would that not cause problems in areas such as prosecution of crimes? Also, I firmly believe that the pain we go through and overcome is a part of what makes us human. To take that away would be a bad thing, in my estimation.

Fixed the borked post, too. Thanks to Don Armstrong for pointing out that my superficial errors hide deeper problems.

1740 - Good evening. I'm trying to keep up, but there's so much going on, and I haven't caught up yet. Perhaps another week and ... who am I kidding. I'll do my best. Meantime I setup a new mailserver and started some migration and testing during this week. Also plenty of archiving and deep backups. On the home front I'm specifying a new machine for Marcia - details on that prospect tomorrow. Now to get some stuff done before dinner guests. Ciao!

Mon    Tues    Wed    Thu    Fri    SATURDAY    Sun
January 21, 2006

1523 - Good afternoon. Since the alarm shrilled at 0700 this morning, I've gotten both cars down for oil and fuel injection service. After that Marcia and I went shopping to get the bits she needs to extend her Flynn Frame for the quilts she's got going now. Then we came home, loaded up Linda Rose's pattern file (actually a drafting plan file, some 3' high by 3' wide, by 2' deep) into the truck and hauled it over there. Coming back in it's place is a glass-front display cabinet that needs some TLC, then Marcia will figure out where I'm going to put it. While we are out running around, Lucy lays by the back door, guarding for our re-entrance (and occasionally practicing for talk like a pirate day). Molly just sits around looking cute.

Lucy practicing for Talk (Look?) Like a Pirate Day Molly looking cute.

Now I'm going to go modify the lumber for the Flynn Frame, and Marcia's going to be dismantling the Christmas gear and packing it away for next year. I warned her that if it was still up by President's Day, that I'd insist that we keep it in place, to save on the effort of tear-down and set up. I don't think that argument went over too well.

Depending on time and effort, I may also order the components for Marcia's new system. We'll see. Ciao!

January 22, 2006

0940 - Good morning. Here's Marcia's new system:

All items purchased from NewEgg except (*) from Crucial.

On travel or holiday for the last few Sundays, I didn't get to posting my usual list of the fallen, so this is going to be painful...

Space vehicle propelled by the pressure of inflationary vacuum state. That's the title of this patent, granted on November 1 of 2005. Localized modified bubble of spacetime is the motive force. But, but .... waitaminnit! I thought that real patents (as opposed to business process patents) required an actual model/proof of concept to be built? My head is going to explode!

I have to get ready for the shopping. We slept in a bit, but it's now time. Marcia took down all the holiday stuff, and I get to pack it back into the attic.Lucky me.

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
