2037 - Good evening. A busy Monday, and but three months to go in the year. My, how time flies. I made it home tonight in time for Marcia and I to take the dogs for about a mile's worth of walking. Nice. Next I formatted and posted Jerry's CMR Mailbag, paid the bills, and prepared for the backups. I'm taking a little break for some cold supper, then I'll finish the backups, and get the trash out. Woo-hoo!

2141 - Good evening. The SMS messages started early today, about 0615 as I was dragging out of bed. A service was whinging, and wouldn't stop until I logged in to soothe it for a while. Eventually that worked, and the noise out of my phone stopped. The rest of the day took its tone from that starting point. But all's well that ends well, so it wasn't too bad. A nice evening to walk the dogs when I got home, so we did. At the moment, I'm running a full set of updates to the Ubuntu Beta install, and reading SciAm. Happy Hump Day.

0849 - Good morning, more or less. A traffic diversion cost me half an hour on my drive in. Hurrah ... not! On the tech side, I had to back away from the Gutsy beta - it just doesn't play well with Parallels yet. So yesterday evening, I reverted to 7.04, which runs just fine. With that in place I can get some testing software installed on the server, because apparently my Plextor PX-750A can't recognize TY 16X DVD+R media as recordable. Grrrrr. I'm going to check the firmware revs and see if I can't get that updated, if that's the problem. One thing at a time.

1547 - Gaaaaaa... Good afternoon. Is this strange compulsion some form of forced penance for all the times I didn't want to do yardwork while I was growing up? I thought to myself yesterday, and again this morning, "It's nice that I really�don't have anything to do in the yard." Then I made a mistake, I walked outside. Seven hours later, I've pruned all the hedges and fence-ivy, then pressure-washed the deck furniture ... and all of the deck. I'll close for now with this one thought: After a day working in the yard, it takes too much energy to listen to Little Feat. But I'm doing it anyway. WTF???

1648 - Grrrrr... Good afternoon again. If you saw yesterday's post, you'd know I was having trouble with the Plextor burner. Ummm...

F*&#@#@! Plextor... oh, wait, it isn't the Plextor at all. It's that old "problem exists between keyboard and chair", aided and abetted by Taiyo Yuden spindles, all of which look identical; Taiyo Yuden discs, which are labeled in 1.5 point type; and growisofs, which only reports that "Media is not recognized as recordable dvd", instead of saying something useful, like, "Why did you drop a CD in here if you want to burn a DVD, moron?"

Sigh. All's well, except for my powers of observation.

1311 - Good afternoon. An uneventful Sunday, so far. Shopping and mowing out front. In a little while, I'm going to hang the drapes that Marcia made. Pictures later or tomorrow. Nothing else personal or techy to report.

Another Sunday, another opportunity to express my pride in our Armed Forces, in the hard, dangerous work they all do out at the sharp end, on our behalf. Another saddening list of casualties from our Mideast adventures in bringing democracy to countries that seem pretty confused about the whole concept. Far too many of those loons think freedom means freedom to kill anyone who doesn't believe what you believe, and any Americans you can get along the way. Some of those caualties are listed here, too. My condolences to the families and units of the fallen.

• Sgt. 1st Class Randy L. Johnson, 34, of Washington D.C., died Sept. 27 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle.
• Cpl. Ciara M. Durkin, 30, of Quincy, Mass., died Sept. 28 at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered from a non-combat related incident.
• Sgt. 1st Class James D. Doster, 37, of Pine Bluff, Ark., died Sept. 29 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive devise and small arms fire.
• Staff Sgt. Donnie D. Dixon, 37, of Miami, died Sept. 29 in Baloor, Iraq, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire.
• Sgt. Zachary D. Tellier, 31, of Charlotte, N.C., died Sept. 29 at Firebase Wilderness, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire.
• Sgt. Robert T. Ayres III, 23, of Los Angeles, died Sept. 29 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire.
• Gunnery Sgt. Herman J. Murkerson Jr., 35, of Adger, Ala., died Oct. 1 while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar province, Iraq.
• Sgt. Randell Olguin, 24, of Ralls, Texas, died Sept. 30 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire.
• Sgt. Chirasak Vidhyarkorn, 32, of Queens, N.Y., died Sept. 29 in Diwaniyah, Iraq, of injuries suffered from a non-combat related incident.
• Petty Officer Third Class Mark R. Cannon, 31, of Lubbock, Texas died Oct. 2 while conducting combat operations in Kunar Province, Afghanistan.
• Seaman Apprentice Shayna Ann Schnell, 19, of Tell City, Ind., died as a result of injuries suffered from a vehicle accident.
• Sgt. Ricardo X. Rodriguez, 23, of Arecibo, Puerto Rico, died Oct. 4 near Bayji, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit during combat operations.
• Spc. Avealalo Milo, 23, of Hayward, Calif., died Oct. 4 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire.
• Spc. Rachael L. Hugo, 24, of Madison, Wis., died Oct. 5 in Bayji, Iraq, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked her unit using an improvised explosive device and small arms fire.
