1509 - Good afternoon. Welcome to Veteran's Day, where we honor the defenders of our nation. Truly, it's something we should do more often. I note that our men and women fighting in Iraq, Afghanistan and around the world do occupy my thoughts each day.
The garage door is done. At initial install, the lowest panel came in with some crush wounds. So they ordered a replacement, which came in last Friday. I was able to schedule for today, a useful timing, considering the holiday. Then I shot into work to take care of a couple of things. Since then, I've gotten the oil changed on Marcia's car, picked up some workout weights for her, and took note of the crowds of economy stimulators overflowing the parking lot and store at Best Buy. No, there was nothing there that wanted to come home with me. But it's fun to check, every once in a while. Now, time for some schoolwork. Ciao!

1918 - It's the drivers. Good evening. Not just the slow pokes, nor the ones that want to do 85 on a 55mph beltway that's running at 38, it's the combination that seems so deadly. The ones that drive fast appear to mostly be paying attention ... after all, it's a slalom course for them. However the Slowski's appear to be in their own world, empty of traffic. They'll be poking along in one lane, then gently drift into another one. A faster lane usually, but they're 20 miles below that lane's traffic. I saw two near misses as the drifters drifted in front of the Grand Slalom competitors this morning. Bloody amazing.
I don't sleep well when I'm on call. So it generally takes me a couple of days to return to normal sleeping, then a week to catch up on my sleep. Right now, two days out of the rotation, I'm whacked. It's not like there's lots of calls or pages. But I sleep far more lightly than normal in anticipation of the event.
The iPhone Mail.app works fine with my VPN connection to work. I can send and receive email just fine, connecting to the internal servers (IMAPS and SMTPS) over VPN. When the VPN is connected, I can't get to external resources, just work-internal, which is just fine with me. It's fairly easy to flip in and out of the VPN. I could do more if only I could put some static entries in the hosts file equivalent on the iPhone. Still, progress is. Now, to supper. Ciao!

1746 - Bowling. I suck at it. And pain, sigh. But that was the corporate event, so that's what we did. Well, what I did. Marcia made small talk and laughed at me. Can't say I blame her. That was it for the day, that and some schoolwork. Ciao!

More art on the walls. |
1633 - More artwork on the walls, now. Good afternoon. This morning, during the shopping run, we picked up the matted and framed copy of the picture of my maternal grandfather's grocery wholesale business. The original picture hung in my grandmother's dining room, and we got a copy shortly after she passed. So, yeah, it's been in a tube all these years, and we finally got it framed. That and we moved the 5x7 pictures of us and the assorted parents from individual frames on a side table to the one matted triplet also on that wall. The four smaller pieces are all originals, so far as we can tell. Marcia did some research, and they're not worth very much, but they make for a nice grouping, don't you think?
I did more school "lab" exercises today. This batch was on performance and event log monitoring for Server 2003. Like all the other labs in this class, I do all the steps, and preserve screenshots at the instructor-requested points in the process. So far it seems to be going okay.
Seven more souls lost in the sandbox. I read today that there's an agreement to a timetable for the continued drawdown and withdrawl of forces from Iraq, an agreement that's independent of "conditions on the ground." While progress is good, why would you NOT write in some contingency planning? Probably to satisfy the zealots in (and out of) the Iraqi government. Still, progress is. I don't see word of anything equivalent for Afghanistan, yet. It's no big help that Pakistan seems to do a psychotic waver between talking a good game (but accomplishing little), and being offended at us for chasing/targeting blackhats inside their borders. Our condolences to the familes and units of the fallen.
