2045 - I'm back. I had a great and memorable birthday weekend. Thanks for all the kind wishes I received from many of y'all. Marcia and I traipsed off the California, Thursday morning. We just got back this afternoon. The trip was full of wonderful time spent with all of my family: my folks, my brother and his daughter, my sister and her family, my oldest friend Sean and his lovely bride... Just spectacular. We've already got all of Marcia's vacation allotted, or it would have been very nice to spend a week or more, and see bunches more people. But I've not really spent time with my family since we moved out here in 2002 — It was time.

The travel itself was medium terrible. It took more than 24 hours for our suitcase to catch up with us on the outbound legs, partly because our second flight was outright cancelled ... we had to rebook to get into town at roughly the same time as previously, but our bag went via [tired|saggy] pony express. The even better part is that the rebooking agent not only rescheduled our second outbound leg into a second and third outbound leg; He thoughtfully canceled all the rest of our flights, so when we went online yesterday to print boarding passes, there were no flights. The awesome part is the American Advantage agent who took care of everything in about 15 minutes Sunday morning and got us back on our flights, in roughly the same seats in the first class cabin. Nice. I still didn't sleep much, though. I'm running on about 2 hours of sleep since 0700 PDT Sunday. Tired, eh? Aside from all the visiting, I read my first Pulitzer Prize-winning novel in a long while: The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, written by Junot Diaz. Interesting book, interesting voice. Recommended, especially if you want to know more about at least one view point of the Dominican Republic.

Now, I'm gonna try to get Jerry's mailbag formatted and online with a minimum of time and errors ... sounds kinda contradictory, eh? Wish me luck, my eyes are already crossing. Ciao!

2149 - Last night, every ounce of energy went into getting the lawns mowed before more rain moved in. I did, then it did. Perfect. Now, tonight, go check out Slydini. Ciao!

2055 - Well, there was a good reason. Last night, I wrote four pages of my class Final Project Phase I, reviewed it, and submitted it. Soon, I'm going to have to write the code. In other news, I've been battling a couple of hanging issues with our backup system, I may now have the answer to one of them. At least that's what the work email on my iPhone is telling me. Testing Monday to confirm the solution, and weeks of observation to confirm the behaviour of the solution. I'm still confused by something, though, and that may require a long conversation with the tech handling my case.

Around here, the reading matter is stacking up again. I think I'll take a cut at that for the next couple of hours. Wish me luck!

2107 - I was going to get an early start today, really I was. But instead of hitting snooze at 0720, I chose to turn the alarm off. At 0845, I rolled out of bed and made the coffee and fed the dogs and had breakfast. By the time I was really awake, it was 1030. One oil change and a trip to the nursery for more compost and some mulch later, it was time to start doing the front yardwork. All of the front is weeded and pruned. I remowed, because there's two inches of new growth since Tuesday. I've turned three bags of compost into my front annual bed, that'll need turning one more time in a few days, then I'll mulch. Tomorrow is back yard: selecting some tomato volunteers out of the big beds, raking the big beds out, and mowing in back. Spring is always lots of work. Whoops. Forgot to shave. Better take care of that. Ciao!

2130 - Wow. Just finished watching The Hunt for Gollum. Certainly a stellar piece of fan fiction, and worth every minute of your time (since that's all you have to pay for it, is your time). Dinner tonight out at Red Lobster, mostly as a thank you for Linda for house sitting and watching the puppies for us. Yummy, yummy stuff.

And we took over half an inch of rain today, too. Nice for the plants in place. Sucks if you had plans to work in the back yard today. On the gripping hand, at least I didn't have to work in the back yard today. But then, I'm now falling behind again. And rain is slated for the next several days. Sigh. The back yard will be hay-high again before you know it. Sigh.

Two marines, a sailor and a soldier reported by DoD this week as casualties in our continuing wars in the Middle East. I'm proud of our serving men and women, and admire them for the commitment to duty and country — They're doing a hell of a job over there, and while I'm looking forward to the day we can wrap it all up and bring them home, they all have my support, all the time. Our condolences to the families and units of the fallen.

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
