2155 - Monday. Bleah. All the chores are done, I cooked enough supper to last the week, and worst of all, it's raining again, already a quarter inch since dusk. The liars say it's supposed to be sunny and high 60's tomorrow. Yeah, sure. G'night.

2047 - Made a stop on the way home from work this afternoon, and picked up some veg ... well, proto-veg. 8 tomato plants and 7 pepper plants. I'm branching out a bit and adding a hot yellow pepper to the mix. I may get get to scotch bonnets. I put weed block fabric (made from recycled plastic bottles) down over all six beds, hoping to keep down the maintenance this year. Then I slit/planted all of today's material. In another week or so, I can re-transplant my volunteers back into the main beds, and get the herb garden rolling for real. Now it's shower time.

2138 - I watched most of Kevin Pollak's Chat Show interview with Felicia Day last night. Fun, but I've got a bone to pick with Mr. Pollak, as much as I enjoy his work. However, not today. I mowed when I got home, and the discretionary energy budget is depleted. Now must search for sleep, or dilithium crystals. Ciao!

1602 - Hi. Progress to date: All of the main garden boxes are planted, with spots for two more ... something if we find something else to grow. All of the back yard watering systems are in place, tuned, and waiting for a new timer unit. And I did systems work last night before bed, then hared off to the office in the middle of the night to reset a database server that had gone all catatonic. Tired, but feeling good about efforts made. Going to pretend to relax, now.

1913 - Okay, final plants are planted or in as seed, all the watering system is up, and I feel pretty good about all of it. But then, after a very late lunch (about 1630), I could hardly keep my eyes open. Tired, I guess.

Returning to the subject of Kevin Pollak... I came across Kevin's recent project, Kevin Pollak's Chat Show, because Felicia Day was a recent guest. Now, I like Kevin Pollak a lot, both as an impressionist and comedian, and as an actor. But, in his show with Felicia, and presumably in prior episodes, he's pushing a term - Intervision (I could hear him use the capital 'I') - to replace whatever he thinks of the Internet as, or possibly just web video of any kind.

The problem I have is that, given the term, he seems to be trying to position web video as the replacement for television. In terms of the Internet, dividing people into creators and consumers (with few of the former, and many of the latter) seems a bit ... out of touch with reality. This Internet thing is a (relatively) new territory, with tremendous amounts of dross to go with (and hide) the gems. The good news is that we don't have to depend on marketeers to tell us what is good, and to decide how to proceed. It was word of fingers (word of mouth in the Internet age) that told us that The Guild was good. It was donations of the patrons, the supporters of The Guild that saw them through the first season. Then the awards and the sponsorship followed.

Now, it's likely that I won't do something video that's wildly popular or a money maker. But I could, as frightening as that is to some people. What the Internet brings to the table is the many-to-many mapping that didn't exist before, in entertainment or education or a hundred other fields. Whatever it is, let's cut the ties to the era of entertainment buggy whips and their manufacturers. Entertainment can be a cottage industry again, with a global reach, instead of just across the village. Most will be crap, but we can trust in the eyeballs and fingers of our friends to help build audiences for that which is good.

Just remember, with a million monkeys writing blogs on the Internet, one of them is bound to plagerize Hamlet. Or are we lemurs? I can never get that straight.

On the face of it, a rougher than usual week being a member of the Armed Forces. No matter which way the price is paid, the warriors listed below gave everything they had for our country. Our condolences to the families and units of the fallen.

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
