2212 - Yesterday was fun. Not only was it a productive work day, but I got home in time to assist the UPS guy in offloading 800 pounds of bamboo flooring. I did the first part of the unboxing and stacked them in the library with all the rest of the stuff that's going upstairs eventually. Once the painting is done, I'll bring them upstairs and finish unboxing, and let the flooring acclimatize for a couple of days before installation. That plus all the normal Monday stuff ate the evening.

Tonight, I relaxed a bit, watched some Holmes on Homes with Marcia. Speaking of, her orthopedist says to wait for a month and let the swelling, etc. come down. Could be meniscus, could be a chipped patela, given the symptoms presented. If there's persisting pain by early April, he'll schedule an MRI, and give her Cortizone to manage the trip to Paducah (for the quilt show). Then, if surgery is called for, it can be as late as June, and he promises full recovery in time for our trip in August.

There. I'm as unwound as I'm likely to get. Ciao!

2200 - Last night, all school work. Tomorrow through Sunday, more of the same - I'm taking the day off work because there's two papers due this weekend from me. Sigh. Usually I manage to get the assignments staggered a bit, or work ahead further. But I managed to lose track of the bigger assignment, so there you go. Meantime, I got this from Linda the other day:

Winners of International Pun Contest The ability to make and understand puns is considered to be the highest level of language development. Here are the 10 winners in the International Pun Contest:

1. A vulture boards an airplane, carrying two dead raccoons. The stewardess looks at him and says, "I'm sorry, sir, only one carrion allowed per passenger."

2. Two fish swim into a concrete wall. One turns to the other and says, "Dam!"

3. Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly, so they lit a fire in the craft. Unsurprisingly it sank, proving once again that you can't have your kayak and heat it too.

4. Two hydrogen atoms meet.. One says, "I've lost my electron.." The other says, "Are you sure?" The first replies "Yes, I'm positive."

5. Did you hear about the Buddhist who refused Novocain during a root canal? His goal: transcend dental medication.

6. A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office and asked them to disperse. "But why?", they asked, as they moved off. "Because," he said, "I can't stand chess-nuts boasting in an open foyer."

7. A woman delivers a set of identical twins and decides to give them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt and is named "Ahmal." The other goes to a family in Spain ; they name him "Juan." Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Ahmal. Her husband responds, "They're twins! If you've seen Juan, you've seen Ahmal."

8. A group of friars were behind on their belfry payments, so they opened up a small florist shop to raise funds. Since everyone liked to buy flowers from the men of God, a rival florist across town thought the competition was unfair. He asked the good fathers to close down, but they would not. He went back and begged the friars to close. They ignored him. So, the rival florist hired Hugh MacTaggart, the roughest and most vicious thug in town to "persuade" the friars to close. Hugh beat up the friars and trashed their store, saying he'd be back if they didn't close up shop. Terrified, they did so, thereby proving that only Hugh can prevent florist friars.

9. Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very little, which made him rather frail and, with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. This made him (Oh, dude, this is so bad, it's good…..) a super calloused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis.

10. And finally, there was the person who sent ten different puns to friends, with the hope that at least one of the puns would make them laugh.

No pun in ten did.

0809 - Argh! I forgot to run the publish script last night. Of course, given the content, you might have thanked me for that lost opportunity. Remote work done for the morning, now starting to write papers for school. Back later.

2127 - Yay! Papers are written, revised, edited, and submitted. Whew. There goes the hardest week of the semester (unless I'm sorely confused, which has happened on too many occasions in the past). Nothing much else to report - made a yummy ham, onion, garlic, potato, and sharp cheddar hash for supper, plus lots of leftovers for lunches in the week to come. Tomorrow night's supper is going to be salmon (farmed, but what the heck), fresh broccoli, and ... something for a starch. Rice? Could be - we went to the Amish market and stocked up on vegetables there, and then eighty bucks worth of assorted fish at Shoreline. Yeah, but broken out into meals and frozen, it comes to under four bucks a plate on the fish side. That's not terrible at all.

Now, J. S. Bach on the speakers (Violin Sonata in A, to be precise), and it's time to unwind. Tomorrow: shopping, sanding, and caulking.

2109 - Not as much progress as I'd like on remodel rooms. Used a scraper on the floor and on the trim in the new guest room, before sanding out all the trim. But less than an hour's work makes it ready for primer. A few hours worth are left for the sitting room, to get to the same state. But I'm more motivated, now that the flooring is here.

I'd been confused (how ... usual) - Linda indeed did join us for supper. That turned out to be salmon marinated with a chili/lime rub, then seared for three minutes on each side. The side dishes were fresh, steamed broccoli and Uncle Ben's Rice. Yum, yum, yum.

While the Kucinich plan to bail out of Afghanistan with the next month or ten failed in the House this week, it renews my concerns about just when we can safely leave Afghanistan in charge of its own affairs. The argument is made "that an abrupt withdrawal would create an opening for the Taliban to return to power and allow Afghanistan to become a haven for terrorists again." I buy that, but wonder how we get from today's situation to the place where that is no longer a good reason for not bringing our men and women home. Our condolences to the familied and units of the fallen.

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
