2220 - Whew. Not a belated birthday for my lovely niece, Alexandra. I called (and left a voice mail, no one home), and wrote the card today. So that's a hook I'm not hanging on, tomorrow. Not much else going on, regular chores and magazine catch up tonight. One by-product of Twitter - The shortened URLs, exemplified first by tinyurl.com, are coming into vogue in magazines. After all, who really want's to type http://popularwoodworking.com/article/video_cuff_banding/ out by hand, when you can just plunk http://tinyurl.com/ylx957b into the browser, instead. Go, synergy!

2143 - There. I was working all evening on my CMIT course. Back to the writing course tomorrow evening. Not much else to do except take note to never call window installation companies back when they badger you over the phone and don't listen. Yeah, Power Window, I'm talking to you. Now good night.

2210 - Home just before 5 this evening, and took advantage of an upside of DST. I managed to get the bed prepped and the snow peas planted, and all the other seeds into their starter pots. That's good, since people at work have begun asking if I've got tomatoes in the ground already (it's far too early). Time to put the mutt out for the last time. Ciao!

2125 - This makes me angry. Grrrrr. Border Patrol mistreats Watts. Watts charged and convicted of felony. What happened to the United States? Okay, that we know. Why are we letting it continue?

Molly likes naps!
Molly likes naps!

2033 - Well, I got out in the front yard and pruned back all the winter dead stuff. The daffodils are blooming in the sunniest spot, other bulbs are pushing up right, left and sideways. Meantime, Molly chooses to sleep instead of help. Well, not sleep, but she does like laying in the middle of the bed, rolled onto her back, on the off chance someone might want to scratch her belly. She did that today, as well as a couple of nights ago when I got that picture at right.

In other news, lawyers are still rapacious bastards, and people are stupid. Man Wins Big Money in Tablesaw Lawsuit is the article on the Fine Woodworking site. A guy used a tablesaw, and damaged his hand. He sues the tablesaw vendor (Ryobi) because they don't have SawStop technology. Sure, it would be nice if they did, but if it was a big deal to this guy, why didn't he buy a SawStop tablesaw? And why didn't the jury ask themselves that question before performing a cashectomy on a tablesaw vendor who chose not to license the tech. Why not put it in the machine, Mr. Vendor? Oh, is it because SawStop charges an arm and a leg? The tablesaw the guy was using according to the article appears to run about $250. The SawStop contractor saw costs $1,600. I'm guessing that the injured guy would not have chosen to spend that much money, unless he knew in advance that he would be using his saw unsafely. Higher end contractor saws seem to run from $500 to $1,000, so Mr. Special (aka Carlos Osorio) was going for the cheaper models to start with. So the injured guy chose not to "buy the insurance", but sued the vendor afterwards. What happened to personal responsibility in our society? Are you sure there's no way off this stinking planet?

2105 - Shopping this morning. Then I made up some Three Meat Chili:

  1. (2) yellow onions, diced.
  2. As much garlic as you like, minced.
  3. 2# ground pork.
  4. 2# ground bison.
  5. 2# ground lamb.
  6. (1) gallon of red sauce stock from my garden (this is a tough ingedient)
  7. (4) oz. of minced, mixed peppers from my garden (Jalapeño, Serrano, Yellow).
  8. (3) cups fresh (preferred) or canned diced tomatoes.
  9. (2) 8 oz. cans of tomato paste.
  10. Cumin and Chili powder to taste (but lightly, let the meats shine through).
  11. EVOO

I sautéed the onion and garlic to translucency in a few tablespoons of Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Split the onion and garlic. Brown half the meat with half the onion and garlic, drain the fat then tip into the pot. Brown the other half of the meat. Add red sauce stock (fresh minced tomatoes, onions, garlic, italian herbs, bay leaves, simmer for several days then freeze in half-gallon containers until needed). Add peppers. Add tomatoes diced and paste. Add chili and cumin powder. Simmer on lowest setting for a couple of hours, adjust seasoning (including salt and black pepper) to taste. Simmer for several more hours. Eat, garnished with cheesey or onion-ish things. I'm preferential towards grated extra sharp cheddar and minced fresh chives. Mmmmm.

Once the chili was simmering, Marcia and I went out to the home center and picked up the balance of the paints for the remodel rooms - crisp linen for the ceilings (just as in the dining room), and a pale green for the sitting room walls. I picked up a boxing bucket, and a bucket grid so that I can just roll paint out of the bucket directly. Thereafter, more weeding in back, installing a new hose roll device in the garage, roasting coffee, etc. A full and busy day.

Six more lives lost to our wars, according to DoD. Our condolences to the families and units of the fallen.

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
