Welcome to Orb Graffiti, a place for me to write daily about life and computers. Contrary to popular belief, the two are not interchangeable.     About eMail - I publish email sometimes. 1754 - Okay. I'm off work for the balance of the week. And by off work, I mean that I'll do a couple of things each morning, check emails from time to time, and such. But no driving to work. Instead, I have a paper to mostly write between now and Sunday midnight. For fun, I'll play about with Solaris 11 Express in VirtualBox - there are lots of cool features that I'll probably be using in production in a couple of years ... no point wasting time learning about them, though.

* * *

I noted this headline in one of my daily ACM newsletters the other day, "Supercomputers 'Will Fit in a Sugar Cube,' IBM Says." The linkage led to this BBC News article.. I envision some tech stirring his cup of coffee, when the CEO wanders into the room with some board members, and asks, "Where's the supercomputer?" Gulp.

Ciao, for now.

0816 - Yep, no post yesterday even though I didn't go to work. I did do an hour or so's work remotely in the morning, then started the actual writing part on my big paper for the semester. I managed to crank out about 1500 words, which ain't bad. Then I set up and baked a few dozen cookies for a Thanksgiving celebration today. I've yet to do the macaroni and cheese I'm also bringing to the event, so I haven't much time here. If you do celebrate Thanksgiving, or just enjoy the day off today, do so and be well. Ciao!

2132 - And again, today. But the entire "rough" draft of my final research paper for the year is completed. Frankly, I'd turn it in as it is, but people are going to pee in it a bit (errr, peer review it), and the professor will want mods as a result. But that's small beans, and due in two weeks. Then there's some form of take-home final that's likely to be 5-6 more pages of writing, and that's due on the same day as my proctored CMIT final. Then I'm done for a month or so. But the happy news is two-fold. The paper I turned in for the CMIT class (every freaking class wants papers, now) came back scored 100%. I can't imagine it was read, but just scanned for spelling and plagiarism, then blessed. Still, the grade is the grade. And I really am getting something out of the writing class, so that's good, too. Time to unwind a bit... Ciao!

2116 - Shopping, baking, cooking. Posted my rough draft to the class conference and my assignments folder. That about covers my day. Oh, hey. I did get my first phishing twitter message today. It said,

@bilborg PauloGustavo31 NO WAY! Lol RT mikem2006: ROFLOL! Was going to send this to U! “Redone68: mikem2006 (cont) http://DONT_CLICK_THIS_olw.da.sg/0GLUs

Now, there are a couple of things in there that might get me to click on the linky, were I a non-paranoid MORON! Of course, if that were the case, then I'd have been running Windows, and I'd probably be reinstalling my system right about now. Instead, I put the link into a wget, to see what came of that:

bilbrey@slartibartfast:~$ wget http://olw.da.sg/0GLUs

bilbrey@slartibartfast:~$ cat 0GLUs
  <html><body>script>
    m = 'w'+'indow'+'.'+'loc'+'ation'+'="/wishlist"'
    done = 0
    go = function() {
      if (!done)  eval(m)
      done = 1
    }
go();  </script></body></html>

Hmmm. So it would want to evaluate "window.location/wishlist", eh? What's that? Looks like a way to attack my credentials/connection with a shopping site that I might be logged into while clicking on this link? Yeah... um, no.

Now, before I sign off tonight...

Our condolences to the families and units of the fallen. As we ate Thanksgiving supper this week, I gave thanks for all the sacrifices made by our troops, for our country. Armed forces: You ROCK!

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
