2044 - All the usual suspects are conspiring against me, and a bit of new stuff, too. I have had problems making use of my "standby" system for many purposes - the nVidia chipset on that ASUS motherboard, while perfectly capable for Linux, was giving me fits when mucking about with BSDs, and I really want to start spending more time with a Solaris variant. So I broke down on Saturday, and dropped a bit over $150 on a new motherboard, another 1TB drive, and 4G of RAM. That, together with the Q8200 I bought (mistakenly) last year and have had sitting on the shelf ever since I realized that I'd managed to buy the ONLY Intel quad core processor without virtualization extensions. There's no trade-in on processors, so I'd just stocked it. In this situation, I'm not interested in virtualization - I'm probably going to make the box into a home server, which gives me more latitude in mucking about on my faster box right next door.

I managed to get all the hardware components installed and the system up and running in about an hour (including disassembly of assorted bits from the Antec case, and 15 minutes rummaging around for the heat transfer goop I knew I had somewhere (I did, you know). I threw on a development release of OpenIndiana, and that's purring along nicely right now. Not that I have any time to play with it, plenty of history reading to occupy the balance of last night, and all of this evening up to now. Now? Now it's time to do some work at the office, remotely. 2250 - School work tonight. I'm being taught about subnets. Yeah, yeah, I know. I've been doing CIDR addressing in my head for the last 20 years. But I have to go through each section of this LabSim product. And it's always good to refresh the fundamentals - I might learn something I've missed (but never missed in practice, if you catch my meaning). It'll be helpful should I decide to go after the CCNA certification following this class. The downside is this LabSim was written at least 4 years ago. That's old ... Anyway, back to the video learning. Ciao!

2107 - Ten or so hours of schoolwork yesterday. Work today for a few hours, remote + at the office. I'm whacked, and it's Sunday evening. I *am* going to take a day off ... HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Heeee! Heh. ... a day off to have some leaf compost delivered and get that turned into the gardens. For a little change of pace, I'm listening at this moment to Parliment, Sir Nose D'Voidoffunk. Just sayin'. I did manage to fit in a little time mucking about with OpenIndiana, before and after supper tonight.

Our condolences to the families and units of these fallen warriors:

• Staff Sgt. Mecolus C. McDaniel, 33, of Fort Hood, Texas, died March 19 in Khowst province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device and small arms fire.
• Staff Sgt. James M. Malachowski, 25, of Westminster, Maryland, died March 20 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
• Master Sgt. Jamal H. Bowers, 41, of Raleigh, North Carolina, died March 18 at Camp Lemonier, Djibouti, as a result of a non-combat related incident.
• Cpl. Brandon S. Hocking, 24, of Seattle, Washington, died March 21 in As Samawah, Iraq, when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.
• Petty Officer 1st Class Vincent A. Filpi III, 41, of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, died March 22 as a result of a non-combat related incident.
• Staff Sgt. Joshua S. Gire, 28, of Chillicothe, Ohio, died March 22, in Logar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device, rocket propelled grenades and small arms fire.
• Pfc. Michael C. Mahr, 26, of Homosassa, Florida, died March 22, in Logar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device, rocket propelled grenades and small arms fire.
• Spc. Justin D. Ross, 22, of Green Bay, Wisconsin, died March 26 in Helmand province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his unit was attacked by small arms fire.
