1719 - Good day. I've got two things left to do for the current remaining class for this semester: a final paper (yeah, a paper for a CCNA class, blargh!), and a proctored final. The latter is 10 days off. I'd rather take it now, when this stuff is as clear in my head as it's likely to be, but that wasn't on the menu. Next session starts in late May.

Two fun items from the last 24 hours. First, yesterday late afternoon, Lexi started barking her head off and growling like she'd cornered something really dangerous. I walked into our bedroom - she was growling at the closet. It turned out that a rolled-up sleeping bag had tipped off of an upper shelf and whacked down. On top of her? I'll never know, but it took me a good five minutes to get her close enough to it so that she could sniff thoroughly and determine the true threat potential. And speaking of threat potentials, there were squirrels. Killer mutant squirrels ... in my dream last night. Seriously, two or more squirrels broke in through a window while I watched and attacked me. I woke up shouting! No more pizza late, right before bedtime, for me!

Thanks for the kind birthday wishes I received from so many of you both, it ain't so bad being "almost halfway", at least so far. Of course I have my once-a-decade physical coming up in June ... so no promises.

1720 - Sorry about being too busy to stop by here - I had more to do than normal, since Marcia was in Paducah, for some quilting thing. Gone six days, she and a friend drove out on Monday. The friend, along with 6 others gathered from the Michigan crew, helped Marcia spend money all week. Then the friend flew home on Friday for other obligations. Marcia was going to do a two-day drive home, but found herself already as far as Charleston, WV by two in the afternoon, so she drove on through, a bit over 800 miles one way.

I was doing yardwork the last two days - yesterday in back, trimming hedges, mowing lawns, filling holes that someone dug in the warden's yard ... Today, pretty much more of the same, except in front. That and I got a bunch of seed started, so we'll see how that goes. Tonight we're living la vida loca - grilling hot dogs - if this bloody unscheduled rain lets up!

A bad, bad week in Afghanistan. Our condolences to the families and units of these fallen warriors:

• Chief Warrant Officer, Terry L. Varnadore II, 29, of Hendersonville, North Carolina, died April 23 in Kapisa province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his helicopter went down due to an undetermined cause.
• Sgt. Sean T. Callahan, 23, of Warrenton, Virginia. died April 23 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
• Lance Cpl. Dominic J. Ciaramitaro, 19, of South Lyon, Michigan, died April 23 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
• Master Sgt. Benjamin F. Bitner, 37, of Greencastle, Pennsylvania, died April 23 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device.
• Sgt. 1st Class Bradley S. Hughes, 41, of Newark, Ohio, died April 24 of a non-combat incident, in Kandahar province, Afghanistan.
• Sgt. David P. Day, 26, of Gaylord, Michigan, died April 24 while conducting combat operations in Badghis province, Afghanistan.
• Capt. Joshua M. McClimans, 30, of Akron, Ohio, died April 22 at Forward Operating Base Salerno, Khost province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with indirect fire.
• Lance Cpl. Joe M. Jackson, 22, of White Swan, Washington, died April 24 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
• Cpl. Adam D. Jones, 29, of Germantown, Ohio, died April 27 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
• Spc. Andrew E. Lara, 25, of Albany, Oregon, died April 27, of a non-combat related incident, in Babil province, Iraq.
• Maj. Philip D. Ambard, 44, of Edmonds, Washington, died April 27, at the Kabul International Airport, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered from gunfire.
• Maj. Jeffrey O. Ausborn, 41, of Gadsden, Alabama, died April 27, at the Kabul International Airport, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered from gunfire.
• Maj. David L. Brodeur, 34, of Auburn, Massachusetts, died April 27, at the Kabul International Airport, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered from gunfire.
• Master Sgt. Tara R. Brown, 33, of Deltona, Florida, died April 27, at the Kabul International Airport, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered from gunfire.
• Lt. Col. Frank D. Bryant Jr., 37, of Knoxville, Tennessee, died April 27, at the Kabul International Airport, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered from gunfire.
• Maj. Raymond G. Estelle II, 40, of New Haven, Connecticut, died April 27, at the Kabul International Airport, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered from gunfire.
• Capt. Nathan J. Nylander, 35, of Hockley, Texas, died April 27, at the Kabul International Airport, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered from gunfire.
• Capt. Charles A. Ransom, 31, of Midlothian, Virginia, died April 27, at the Kabul International Airport, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered from gunfire.
• Lance Cpl. Ronald D. Freeman, 25, of Plant City, Florida, died April 28 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
• Sgt. Matthew D. Hermanson, 22, of Appleton, Wisconsin, died April 28, in Wardak province, Afghanistan of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire.
• Pfc. Jonathan M. Villanueva, 19, of Jacksonville, Florida, died April 27, in Wardak province, Afghanistan of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire.
• Spc. Preston J. Dennis, 23, of Redding, California, died April 28 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.
• Pfc. Robert M. Friese, 21, of Chesterfield, Michigan, died April 29 in Al Qadisiyah province, Iraq, of injuries sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with a rocket propelled grenade.
